There were some fantastic displays at the recent National Junior Rowing Championships in London, with Falmouth School students cementing themselves as some of the best young rowers in the country. Students ranging from years 8-12 travelled to the capital and achieved some truly impressive results.
The event, held at the Lee Valley Leisure Athletics Centre, welcomed over 2,000 competitors from across the country ranging from 11-18 years and Falmouth School students certainly made their mark. Year 8 student Mattie Macpherson who represented the Greenbank club put in a strong performance, to finish in 65th place for the whole country. Year 10 students Georgia Hawkins of the Plymouth Schools Rowing Club and Izzy Macpherson (also of Greenbank) had a stunning day, with Georgia finishing in a superb 22nd place and Izzy with an incredible PB that led her to 7th in place.
In addition, there was success for the Year 12 duo of Isaac Hayes and Theo Fleming (also Plymouth School Rowing Club). The pair achieved impressive individual finishes, in 13th and 9th respectively before picking up a silver medal in the team race. Head of PE at Falmouth School Christy Benney was delighted with how well the students did. “The students have all trained incredibly hard in the lead up to this event and we are extremely proud of their achievements at such a prestigious sporting event’’ she said.
