Gold for Will!

FalGCSE18-007

Falmouth College student Will Daniell has received the Gold Duke of Edinburgh award after a gruelling 12-month period. Will undertook three tasks for the first section of the course, learning a new skill (Driving), a physical activity (Cycling) and volunteering (youth engagement in politics).

He also had to complete a five day long residential as the second section of the award, which was completed on farmland in Wellington, Somerset where he went Deer Stalking and learnt advanced camp-craft techniques.

After a year of work on these three tasks and a residential all that was left, was two daunting expeditions. The first was lasted three day, with the second even longer at four days. On the final expedition Will paddled in a bell boat against the flow of the River Thames, from Runnymede in Surrey to Abingdon in Oxfordshire. Progress was slow, with an average speed of 2 miles per hour, which meant paddling for 12 or more hours!

Will said “it was a tough year, but I’m really pleased to come through it with the award. The expeditions were very hard, but the sense of achievement at the end made it all worthwhile.”

Will shall be attending Buckingham Palace for the award ceremony early next year!
