Letters from the Headteacher

Update - 8 January 2021

January 8th 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

Despite there being few students in school it has been an intensely busy week. Each government announcement has had a huge impact on different areas of our community here in school and for our families.

In addition to the lockdown, the news that summer GCSE and A level exams have once again been cancelled for our examination groups will have been a shock for these students and their parents. The assessments that were due to take place this week and in the next few weeks have also been cancelled on safety grounds.  The Secretary of State for Education, Gavin Williamson, has stated that ‘while the details will need to be fine-tuned in consultation with Ofqual, the exam boards and teaching representatives, I can confirm now that I wish to use a form of teacher-assessed grades’. We await the details but we are relieved that he also said ‘This year we are going to put our trust in teachers rather than algorithms.’ We expect students in exam years to continue with their studies as this will help them in their future studies and job and college applications.

For all students Show My Homework will be the method of letting students know about their lesson content. The pattern of lessons will follow the school timetable, but students are able to complete their studies at a time of day that suits your family. We are also preparing a schedule of live broadcast lessons that will augment the online work. You may wish to look at the parents’ guide to home learning through the link http://www.falmouth.cornwall.sch.uk/274/what-we-are-learning-and-why

We also will be keeping in touch with families through email and telephone calls.  The Year 11 Parents Evening in the school calendar for next Thursday 14 January will go ahead on the online school cloud system. You will receive an invitation by email.

Also going ahead are the Year 11 Falmouth Futures interviews, where we discuss with students how their plans for the future are shaping up, the Year 12 and 13 Falmouth College Open Evening (online of course!) and the university entrance applications through UCAS. It is important to focus on continuing these events wherever we can as they look forward to future exciting events in our students’ lives.

As always I hope that you and your families are well and if there is any way that we can support you here in school please contact us.

Best wishes

Alex George
